The Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association’s Honors and Awards Committee recently announced that Kevin J. Collins, MD, has been named as recipient of the Jack C. Hughston Physician of the Year Award for 2011.
Dr. Collins is the team physician for Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia and he works with Kurt E. Jacobson, MD, caring for athletes at Valdosta State University. Dr. Collins practices general orthopaedics with an interest in sports medicine and he is the physician-in-charge at the Hughston Valdosta Clinic.
Dr. Collins graduated from the Mercer University School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana and completed his residency at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center and Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport. Dr. Collins also completed a sports medicine fellowship through the Hughston Foundation in Columbus, Georgia.
Dr. Collins will be presented the award on January 13, 2012, during the Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association’s Annual Meeting and Symposium that will be held at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center in Peachtree City, Georgia. At the meeting, Dr. Collins will be presented with an Honorary Membership to the Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association’s as well as a commemorative plaque.
The award is named for Jack C. Hughston, MD, a pioneer in sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery and an advocate of the athletic training profession. Dr. Hughston was recognized with the inaugural award in 2001 and Kurt E. Jacobson, MD, FACS, received the award in 2004.
