Hughston Foundation Athletic Training Program

AT Website Fellowship Application

In 2010, the Hughston Athletic Training Fellowship Program became the official sports medicine provider for the Muscogee County School District. The athletic training fellows, along with support from Hughston physicians, now provide care for all middle and high school athletes in Muscogee County as well as coverage for Glenwood School, Smith’s Station High School and Chattahoochee Valley Community College. The program is a collaboration between the Hughston Foundation, Columbus State University (CSU) and Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital. Administration is overseen by the Hughston Foundation.

Participants in the Athletic Training Fellowship complete a two-year assistantship where they are exposed to a variety of sporting events and teaching environments while studying to obtain a master’s degree from CSU. The fellows are assigned coverage of local schools and are graduate teaching assistants at CSU. In return, the fellow’s tuition is waived and a stipend is awarded.

While at Hughston, each fellow is required to complete a research project with the approval of the Institutional Review Board or to write two patient-education articles for publication. The staff conducts weekly meetings to discuss important events and community outreach opportunities, in addition to a monthly educational session alongside Hughston physicians.

The members of the Athletic Training Fellowship give back to the community by helping out at local events such as pre-participation physical exams for high school athletes, community athletic events, the Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens, various state championships, Georgia High School Wrestling Assessments and a regular Saturday High School Sports Injury Clinic. All of these activities are part of Hughston’s Community Outreach Program.
