Osteoporosis is the loss of bone density that weakens normal bone. Often, it occurs in women after menopause. Osteoporosis can lead to spine fractures following minimal trauma. The fractures can be painful and often heal in an altered position increasing curvature of the spine (kyphosis). Preventative steps can be taken and are found to be very effective. Prevention can include adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol consumption, and stopping smoking. Periodic bone density testing after menopause can be helpful because osteoporosis patients respond well to treatment when diagnosed early.
